Mil palabras: dollar/peso dance

My cousin, Tere, and Dad doing the dollar/peso dance in December (Salamanca, Guanajuato)
Tere’s wedding day on Monday, December 26, was way too long. The day started with a wakeup call at 5 am and ended around 1 am the next day. The day involved a 6-hour roadtrip from Jerez to Salamanca, Mass, reception and baile (dance). I wore beautiful gold heels I could barely walk in but ended up running around in when I did “la víbora de la mar,” drank a little too much alcohol, was bit by a couple of mosquitoes, and didn’t wear my sweater when I should have. The next day, my feet hurt like crazy and I couldn’t stop coughing.
It was all worth it if only to witness my first ever dollar/peso dance, celebrate Tere’s wedding, and to be around dozens of people who share my last name, father’s graying hair, Grandpa Bartolo’s features, and my big lips.
How come I never see pics of you dancing?
Looks like you guys had a lot of fun…great pic, great post.
this is a gorgeous picture! i’ve never seen a dollar/peso dance!
You should see pics of HP dancing!! I’ve got a couple, $5 each.
But I agree, I want to see pics of you dancing in the sexy heels.
when ever we have those in my family, we have to keep an eye on the travieso kids trying to get some of the money. but yeah, mexican weddings are cool.
I’m finding out that these damn “Bailes de Dolar” are turning into “Bailes de Cinco Dolares.” I went to one wedding where the guy said the minimum was 5 bones. Madre santisima.
DT,
You shoulda used pesos.
It’s worth having a dollar dance..at the last wedding I was at the couple collected almost $1,000!! To think I just pinned $1 on the groom’s sock. They must’ve thought I was a cheap ass!
HP,
Here’s one.
Jennifer,
Thanks. I wish you could see more of Tere in this photo. She was a beautiful bride, but aren’t they all?
Oso,
Why the hell would I want to pay for pics of HP dancing? Eek. I don’t think there are any pictures of me dancing in those heels, but I complied by uploading a picture. Don’t make fun of my white legs.
Tin,
I’ve never seen kids try to take money. I do think it’s cool when they line up with their dollar that their mom/dad gave them or that they saved for the occasion. I used to do that.
DT,
Damn, Texas Mexicans are weird. Well, I assume those who set a minimum for a dance with the novio o novia were from Texas too. Que ingratos.
Gustavo,
Oh yeah. It’s a silly tradition but I’m sure that money helps considering weddings are so damn expensive.
DT – you got to be kidding?!?!?! LOL I would’ve been like well you can keep your novia. That is beyond tacky. Well, wait… I’ve been to a couple bridal showers that have $$$$$$$ on it. Meaning money only. I purposely bring a non-monetary gift to one of those.
Likin’ the blue toe nail polish.
