Hey, pa’ fuiste pachuco!

Anyone else think Johnny Depp drew some inspiration from early ’80s Eddie Olmos in his role as el Pachuco in the film and theater versions of Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit? Compare and contrast.

Johnny Depp Zoot Suit

Depp is missing the hat and from this full body photo you can see that the pants are not as high waisted and as baggy as a pachuco would wear them. I also couldn’t find any photos of Depp doing the lean back with left foot forward stance. Despite the differences, the resemblance is uncanny (at least from the waist up).

  1. oh man, that is funny. A few weeks ago when Bri and I were at the hospital we saw a pachucho, no joke! He had the hat, and the super baggy pants, shiney ass shoes and a collared shirt. He had a cane too, not sure if that’s pachucho related or if he actually needed it to walk. Hehe.

  2. Oh lawd……You’d CRACK up at some pictures I have of myself with short hair and the “stache”.

Not that it’s bad being told of a resemblance to someone like that… I like to think I look like myself.

  3. Great observation. When I saw him during the Golden Orbs, what I thought was that he was doing the whole Latino thing. He can be convincing, pero de veras que Olmos he is not.

  4. hahaha!
Hey, now that you mention it… yeah, he looks like a spittin’ image!
    *hehe*
    Too funnyyyyyyyyy…
I would love to hear him say “Orale Vato… que pasa?”

  5. My all time favorite Johnny Depp moment came when he was on “Inside The Actors Studio” and James Lipton started asking about his tattoos and what meanings they had… anyway he got to one on Johnny’s hand that simply had the number ’3′.

James Lipton: And what does the number 3 tattooed here on your hand mean?

Johnny Depp: Umm. One time I was drinking with a friend of mine, and we were doing some other stuff too, and he said ‘I wanna tattoo the number 3 on your hand’, and said ‘okay’, and he then he did… so that’s what it means.

    James Lipton: (long pause) oh…. I see…. ummmm…. Let’s go to a commercial break.

  6. Just cruising el web and came across your site. NICE. I loooove el Juani too. I’m with Tin on this one we have the benefit of observation through a Chicana lens…y todo. Great site!
