The ridiculous part is that completing a FAFSA is required to graduate at my school even if you aren't going to college. (Undocumented students don't actually file it, but they have to fill it out. Regardless, it can be very scary for them to even just fill it out.) I have students who live with their grandparents or aunts or uncles, but their parents are still their legal guardians - it can get pretty messy. I hope you can share your research on your website! I commented to your blog a few months ago during the walk-outs last spring and I've been regularly reading since - I really enjoy your writing! In my alumni interviews students ask two questions every single time--"What's it like going to school on the East Coast?" and "What about financial aid?" I encourage them to apply for financial aid if their parents make less than $200K a year (some don't because they're "middle class" and making more than $40K a year) and tell them that loans are not the biggest, baddest thing to happen to someone and that some loans are worth it (i.e., "Don't your friends have loans for cars and houses? Isn't an education worth it, too?") Let me know if your paper becomes available for general consumption, I'd like to read your thoughts on this issue. You’re not kidding.
