Too many things have frustrated me today. The exchange below is one of them. M is on my MySpace friends list because our families are close and we were involved in the same church youth group as teens.
I replied once to the first part of the bulletin, but ignored the other parts. I don’t feel like continuing the discussion, mainly because my attention should be focused on my meeting. If I was gonna reply, what should I say?

Date: May 5, 2007 1:52 PMIsn’t it funny how Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of a single victory over invading forces from another country. Yet presently today, the decendents of those freedom fighters are fighting to justify an “invasion” into another country, and anyone who tries to rally against them is termed a “racist?”

Date: May 5, 2007 2:15 PMI think a military invasion/attack is a whole lot different than labor migrants surrepitiously crossing a border or overstaying visas.

Oh yeah, in light of the day, I leave you all with my haiku commemorating the date.

5 de what? I always thought it was only celebrated by americans.
All I know is that I’m watching a fight tonight and that I’m drinking some beer in the process. Most likely German or Dutch.
btw, dude/dudette needs a serious history and economics lesson.
Happy Saturday Cindy.
[insert lame joke about ignorant xenophobes]
Obivously M falls in with the ‘I don’t want to be called a racist even though I have racist views’ category.
As I like to tell most people who use invasion and reconquista to describe Latino immigration, “Hey you say we lost the war and gave up the land, you say Columbus was inevitable, and that change happens. Well this is just another example of change. Shut up and learn Spanish.”
M reminds me all to well of the ones that say – I’m not against legal immigration. I’m just against the ones that don’t follow the rules and come here legally. Riiiiiiiiiight. As you have done it’s better to ignore, because you cannot be bothered by ignorance.
R.,
I’m not sure history is a forte of the most ardent opponents of undocumented immigration.
Rio,
Yup. That joke probably wouldn’t be too lame. I’m sure it’d be better than Mencia’s jokes.
Supa Dupa,
I love how our opponents use the reconquista/invasion way more than most MEChistas.
Julissa,
And they don’t dislike dark skinned Mexicans either. They just want them to speak English.
