Question of the week: Grooving at home plate

I went to my first Dodger game of the season on Sunday. I had great seats at field level in right field. The bad thing about those seats was that there was no shade from the sun and it was a bit hard to see home plate, but we managed.

In all the dodger games I’ve ever been to, I’ve never heard a player have a Los Lobos song as his at-bat song. It seems odd too, since they’re from East LA. That changed on Sunday when Rafael Furcal, the Dodgers’ shortstop, came up to bat. I heard a familiar song, “La Venganza de los Pelados” by Los Lobos (featuring Café Tacuba) play as he walked over to home plate. Each time Furcal came up to bat after that, they played the song, and I kept thinking it was cool not only because I love Los Lobos, but also because Furcal is a great (and handsome) player. Now I know he has good music taste.

Nomar Garciaparra (above) had War’s “Lowrider” as his at-bat song.

La Pregunta: What would you want played as your at-bat song?

  1. Hey Dodger-chica! I was at that game too! Lodge section, 3rd baseline. I would want my song to be “Hot, Hot, Hot!” That song has always made me want to move. :)

  2. you know, Javi & I have asked each other this question many times, and I still cannot come up with an answer. I might choose an Ozomatli song… but I’d have to give it a lot of thought…
p.s. your first game of the season?! Its July Cindy! Let’s hit one up soon! :)

  3. “Harvester of Sorrow” by Metallica. Maybe “El pelotero” by Lupillo Rivera, but that song is about slanging eight balls… I don’t think the Dodgers would be too happy about that song.

  4. Whoever wrote 100 Miles and Runnin’ by N.W.A. is my hero. If I ever get into a police chase that would be the first thing I would think to play.

  5. That is a GREAT question. My friends and I play the “at bat music” game all the time… Like HP, I’m a fan of some good old school NWA, but I doubt the stadium PA guy would put on anything with questionable language so I’d have to go with something from Rage… most likely “Know Your Enemy”, or “Testify”.

  6. Mabye Beatie Boys – Sabotage, but since I’m from Detroit I have to represent. Probably the only song that I like from Eminem – 8 Mile.

  7. Thanks HP, I love that Cindylu’s blog turned into a forum for Compton’s finest. I don’t think any ballpark would play any of their songs outside of “Express Yourself” or Eazy E’s “We Want Eazy”. That said, if I went up at bat I’d want the speakers blaring “It’s not about a salary it’s all about reality” from Gangsta Gangsta.

  8. This past November my HS alma mater Schurr won CIF in footbal. They enterd the field to Jimi’s Voodoo Chile Slight Return. It was very impressive ’cause they played a much larger team in the semis called The Highlanders who marched on to the field in unison behind a bunch of skirt wearing bagpipe players. Before they could finish counting off and stand at attention the strains of Jimis guitar intro filled the air and the Schurr fans all jumped up cheering as the team ran on the field like a wild mob.

So I would pick Voodoo Chile Slight Return.

Good point. While they could use the child’s version of Compton rap, it just wouldn’t have the same effect (though Julissa might then like it j/k).

  10. It’s funny how most of the dudes (not that there were many responses from the dudettes) lean towards songs that are nominally ‘hard’. Let down your guards vatos, that pose has a limited life span! It’s quite okay to be a wuss.

  11. My choice
Si Señor from Control Machete… it makes me think I’m a badass. If I want something more fitting of my personality, I’d go with something from Café Tacuba like La Ingrata.

    Lex,
“Hot, hot, hot!” would’ve been a perfect song for that day. It was way too hot and sunny out there.

    Gabbo,
I had a really busy spring quarter! I’ve wanted to go several times, but didn’t make it until the beginning of July. At least it was before the All-Star Break. My summer is a lot more open for games, let’s just do a night one.

    HP,
Why am I not surprised that you picked Compton rap? Oh yeah, and wow! You found something you could agree on with Fabian and Rio. Stranger things could happen, I guess.

    Diego,
Would the Dodgers really know the true meaning of El Pelotero?

    Fabian,
AUG… hmmm. Sounds like a good choice.

    El Chavo,
I guess the guys who picked the “macho” songs wanted something that would pump them and fans up. They have soft sides, really.

    César,
Is that song off a more recent Album album? I just have Eureka Son.

    Rio,
What’s with the NWA? Dude… And really, how many Post-Pocho artists get in to police chases?

    Geo,
Ooh! That song would be great for the current political climate.

    Joel,
Did you guys get together and decide to all include NWA in your answers?

    Julissa,
If you wanted to represent Detroit, you could go a little more old school and choose something from Motown’s glory days.

    Big Pancho,
Yay! Something besides NWA! My cousin went to Schurr too, I’m not sure if he knows they won CIF.

    Luiseño,
I don’t know that. What kind of music is it? The title is pretty interesting.
