Supa, that is a good question whether we are now in a post-nationalism era. I am not sure that I know the answer. However, I don't think that patriotism is for the least traveled. It simply denotes a positive (for the most part) attitude toward a nation. Mexicans and Mexican Americans have lots of patriotism toward Mexico, that is why we celebrate 16 de Septiembre with el Grito from the steps of LA City Hall, along with Cinco de Mayo, and why so many Mexicans attempt to pass down their traditions and culture to their children that are born in the US. And yes, I have my rose colored glasses on most of the time. It is my opinion that we do live in a beautiful world.

I am proud to be an American, a Mexican American, a Chicano. My mom taught me to be proud of the country in which I was born, just like she was proud of the country she was born in, Mexico. I don't deny that I am an American first, with a strong "full-blooded" Mexican heritage.

I am fluent in both English and Spanish, something that many of my American-born colleagues who claim to be "Mexican" are not. In fact, my mother taught me to read and write Spanish before I learned English. She also taught me to be greatful to this (my) country for all the opportunities that it provided, and to take advanage of those opportunities. Opportunities that would not be available in Mexico unless you are in the wealthy ruling class.

Mexicans are very nationalistic people, just like the peoples of other countries that I have had the privelege to visit. Its a beautiful thing to be proud of your nation, your culture and roots, even if your nation is not perfect. I know, because I am proud of my nation, my culture and my roots.

Mis dos centavos.

I have a few of Sarah Vowell's books, but I haven't gotten around to reading Assassination Vacation yet. I've read Radio On and I like her style a lot. She has that perfect bit of sarcasm in her voice...I dig that in a writer.

I sort of have the same feelings about "race" as you do about calling yourself American or Mexican.

Any form that I get, whether it be Jury Duty, Health Insurance, etc, etc.... When the part of "What race are you?" comes up, I never check Hispanic, or Latino.

I always put "other" and write down "Human".
I wish I could see their faces when they read that. After all, there is only one RACE in this earth; the HUMAN race.
I've never heard Of Vowell, but i'll try and see if any of the books arouse my interest.

I like The Partly Cloudy Patriot too. But I enjoy her so much more when I hear her read out loud--maybe it's the character her voice brings to the writing that's different when heard than read. I was in the marching band too--and I always felt guilty about humming those patriotic songs. It's annoying that they're just so darn catchy!
