Halloween on a budget: Frida Kahlo

I’ve never done the Frida Kahlo costume mainly because it’s a pretty popular costume in my social circle. About once a year, I see at least one Frida. At one particular party (see above photo), two friends were dressed as Frida. As you can see, you don’t need to be a woman to do this one.

What you’ll need:

Once you get everything together, just put it on. Consult Frida’s self-portraits or just do your own thing. You can do a twist on it too and paint one side of your face as a calaca and be calaca Frida.

Next up in the low-budget costume series: la Adelita.

That “rod through the torso” tip will come in handy! Thanks!

  2. Diego Says:

Bonus points for taking a female as a date?

  3. Bonita in Pink Says:

I’ve never seen a Frida halloween in costume on Halloween!
    That’d be so cool! LOL

  4. Gustavo Arellano Says:

I LOVE this series. More, por favor!

This is great! I’ve actually been considering a Frida costume, but where does one find huipiles and rebozos in LA? Seems like an obvious question, but I haven’t owned a blouse since childhood. My gut instinct is Olvera Street and you KNOW they must go for a premium there. Even more fun is that my hair in braids is long enough to go from ear to ear… YES.

As much as I adore Frida Kahlo… long ago I got tired of her over used image.

However, if you ever see any examples of Frida as a guy and take pictures… I am curious to see. I once tried doing it and I couldn’t pull it off.

    Raul,
Nothing like adding a little gore for Halloween.

    Diego,
Yes! This is definitely a queer-friendly costume. I was going to add Tina Modotti (the photographer) in the list with Diego Rivera and Trotsky, but I wasn’t sure if Frida actually had an affair with her.

    Bonita,
    I’ve seen a couple.

    Gustavo,
I’m working on it (and not studying for my qualifying exam…).

    Astrid,
I don’t know where you’d find a huipil and rebozo in LA aside from la Placita (aka Olvera Street). I bought the stuff I have in Mexico. Maybe you can see if relatives might have stuff?

    Urban Memo,
On my old blog I used to have a banner that read “Frida obsessed Chicana? Not quite.” Or something like that. I can’t remember.

    Cindy,
Tell Astrid to try looking for them at the mercadito on 1st street and Lorena in ELA. Sometimes you can find these also at indoor swapmeets. There is suppose to be a huge mercadito in downtown, but I have never been there so I do not know exactly where it is located. Good luck!
