Mind you, I never studied spanish (took French for 6 years instead) but I don't have an accent. So while people made fun of your spanish, people make fun of the fact that I sound "mexican" rather than Ecuadorian. My mom grew up in Mexicali and they say words like "parquiar" to park your car that is, ...if you say that in Michoacan...they look like you like what the hell did you just say? Estacionar is the correct term! lol They also say Walmar ( Walmart) and Cosco ( Costco) and if I pronounce it in English they look at me like WTF?? As a kid when we went to Mexico, I used to ask my tias for things like "Pina-bada" (peanut butter), "kukis" (cookies), and "bananas" (duh). I'd just say it in Spanish, and had no idea I was actually saying words in English, lol. It was all the same to me. Sometimes I think growing up bilingual has totally messed with my head, lol....but I know its a blessing. It can still be hard though. I totally hear you on this one.
